Bergamot is a citrus fruit that originates from the plant Citrus bergamia. This is an evergreen tree, between three and four metres tall, with very fragrant white flowers and glossy, fleshy leaves. The fruit of the bergamot is an intense yellow colour, with a round shape slightly flattened at the poles.Cultivated mainly in the coastal strip, it is widespread in Calabria. Its geographical origin is uncertain, as are the citrus fruits from which, through hybridisation, it was generated. However, the origin of the name is Turkish: beg armudi, meaning ‘lord’s pear’.
